Roman Catholic AnswerIn the Catholic tradition, the only eccelsial groups which can be called Churches are those they have a valid priesthood, and, of course, valid apostolic succession (their bishops have all been validly consecrated by valid Catholic Bishops). These would include the Old Catholics, the Polish National Catholics, all Eastern Rite Catholics, the Orthodox Churches, and the St. Pius X Society. All of these Churches observe Lent. The only groups which do not observe Lent would be protestant ecclesial communities, and they are not valid Churches as they lack apostolic succession and a valid priesthood.

NEW ANSWER=Lent is supposedly based on Jesus 40 day fast after his baptism. was he then establishing a ritual to be followed yearly. not at all. this is evident in that The Bible does not record any such practice among the early Christians. Lent was first observed in the 4th century after Christ. Like many other teachings of Christendom it was borrowed from pagan sources. if Lent is in imitation of Jesus fasting in the wilderness after his baptism why is it observed the weeks leading up to Easter, supposedly the time of his resurrection? Jesus did not fast during the days prior to his death. the gospel accounts indicate that he and his disciples visited homes and ate meals in Bethany just a few days before he died. Matt 26;6,7. Luke 22;15, John 12;2. There is something to learn about Jesus fasting AFTER his baptism. He was embarking on a vital ministry. The vindication of Jehovah's sovereignty and the future of the entire human race were involved. This was a time of deep meditation and for prayerfully turning to Jehovah for help and guidance. During this time Jesus appropriately fasted. This indicates that fasting can be beneficial when done with the right motive and on a fitting occasion-compare col 2;20-23

Why do the Catholic churches cover the saints during Lent?

Usually, the cross is not covered except on Good Friday and then it is slowly uncovered for the adoration of the cross. In the pre-Vatican II church it was common practice to cover all statues in the church during Lent. Some churches still observe this today. Lent is meant to be a time of penance and deprivation. Covering the statues and allowing for little or no adornment of the church helps us focus on the coming passion and death of Our Lord. The Easter Vigil Mass marks the end of Lent and celebrates the glorious resurrection of Our Lord and the church is once more decorated in spectacular fashion.

Do baptists celebrate palm sunday?

Most Baptists will only observe the Holy Week that starts on Palm Sunday and ending with Good Friday and Easter Resurrection Sunday. However, most Baptists do not observe all forty days of Lent that starts on Ash Wednesday. But there are a few Baptists that do that as well. But the great majority of Baptists observe only the final Holy Week and abstain from observing Lent or the entire Lenten season. There are also a few strict Fundamental Baptists who don't observe neither Lent or Holy Week at all. Since each Baptist church is autonomous, there will be some variations in their views on this subject.

By putting the sign of the cross on your forehead with the ashes of the palms from palm Sunday Perhaps the above is a rite in the Catholic church, but other Christian denominations such as Lutherans commemorate Ash Wednesday with a service of repentance, as this is the lead-in into Lent. There are no special rituals involved: just confession. Many Protestant churches do not observe Ash Wednesday at all.

Lent asks us to be less what and think more of others?

The purpose of Lent is to provide that purification by weaning men from sin and selfishness through self-denial and prayer, by creating in them the desire to do God's will and to make His kingdom come by making it come first of all in their hearts." Believe it or not, Lent was never observed by Christ or His apostles. He commanded His disciples to "Go you therefore, and teach all nations…teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you" (Matt. 28:19-20). Jesus never commanded them to observe Lent or Easter. He did, however, command them to keep Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread. In fact, during His last Passover on earth, Christ gave detailed instructions on how to observe the Passover service. He also instituted new Passover symbols (John 13:1-17).
