One reason is there are many substantiated illnesses associated with the use of tobacco/nicotine. Therefore gathering evidence of wrongful injury or death in a personal or class action suit against tobacco companies is not difficult. In the issue of liquor (including beer) it is much more difficult to prove the harm, except in criminal cases such as someone being killed or injured by a intoxicated driver. Abeit alcohol does cause great physical and psychological harm to the user and many innocent people. The reality in both cases is the government makes BIG $$$ from the sale of tobacco and alcohol. Of course the loss in terms of medical costs, disability benefits, the loss to the workforce and so on is equally costly. One can draw their own conclusions in regards to the convoluted logic applied by government agencies in these particular areas.
