Why don't rivers run dry during long periods of freezing temperatures I understand that running water won't freeze but surely at the sources it would freeze and not enter the river?

most river sources are from underground springs. The water temperature in the spring is the temperature of the earth below the frost line. When water enters a river it is insulated from the air temperature by the surface ice so it continues to flow. In addition, the water in the river has insulated the river bed so that it maintains temperatures of the earth below and not the air above.

You can run your vehicle with water alone in moderate temperatures and it will do the job. But, if you mean by "running out of antifreeze" you mean there is no liquid in the radiator, then yes, your vehicle can overheat and ruin the engine.

Maybe it is set too cold try turning the temp control back a bit. Or listen to the refrigerator does it ever turn its self off, or is it running all the time?? If it is running all the time then it is getting too cold and freezing the food - this means it might need a new thermostat (temp control)
