They believe in taking their natural time, not letting machines quicken the pace of their life's existence. A vehicle is a conveyance that hastens the pace of their life.
It is just to easy to jump in an automobile, go here and there at a whim, distracting them.
It is better, in their view, to be forced by circumstance ,and the use of horse and buggy, to travel only when necessary.
They do travel in cars and buses, but it requires hiring a driver or traveling to the bus station. These choices also limit travel.
They are very community oriented (Amish community). Not allowing them to own or operate motorized transportation is an effort to keep the community together. In this area (Lancaster, PA) they can't ride a bicycle either.

The Amish will most likely drive a horse and buggies or even on bicycles. Only few Amish own cars.

The Amish and Mennonites have very few difference. Mennonites will however have electricity, running water, and running cars where Amish will not.
The preferred way to drive the Amish buggy is "tickle their feet."
