Why dont the automatic trans not start off in low when in drive have to manually put the gear shift in low to start off?

This problem could be the linkage in the transmission. The transmission could also be going out and would need replaced.

To race a car with an automatic transmission do you start in the lowest gear or in drive?
Leave it in drive - and let the automatic transmission shift for you. It shifts based on how much power is required by the push of the gas pedal. If you shift manually you risk exceeding the red-line and damage the engine and xmission. Usually you need to dive it and learn the shift points under acceleration. If you lift off the gas to about 1/2 throttle during these points, the transmission will shift firmer. It's harder on other driveline components. Cars and transmissions aren't made to do it. So buy a shift kit that lets you manually shift whenever you want. Automatic transmissions are not all designed to race but made for efficiency. if you have a sport type of car the transmission usually will do better than you can. If it's not a sports car you may try to use the transmission manually but be careful if you don't have a tachometer you could easily red line and blow your engine, higher rpms when you shift will not always work you just have to experiment to see how your car reacts. By the way, racing automatics manually will just destroy them before their time so I hope you're making big bucks for a new one!

I had the same problem with my '92 camaro 3.1 V6. Take your car to a transmission specialist, and he can throw a diagnostic pad on it. On mine, my entire transmission and torque converter were fried. Cost me $1000.

If the tracker is a "standard shift" not automatic transmission. You could pop start the engine by putting the car in 1st gear, with the clutch pedal down and the ignition on. Roll the car and once car is rolling release clutch pedal. Vehicle should start, hope this is what you ment by "manually".

Absolutely Your shift rod is not seated properly. The shift rod is attached to your transmission at the rear wheel, right by the brake pads. There is an adjustment nut for the shift there. 1. Loosen the nut but do not remove it. 2. Manually put shift in Neutral. 3 Now tighten nut. 4. Shift should now be in proper alignment. 5. If this does not work, try again. You will see that by pulling in and out on the short shift stub coming out of the transmission, that this is what you need to adjust.
