Could be a vacuum leak. Check the gasket between the throttle body and the intake manifold, you may find it damaged.
Either you were low on gas, you need a transmission check, or the fuel pump may be going out.
I am answering my own question for others incase this happens to them. It was the temperature gauge for the computer (not the dash), but the plugs I had put in the first time fouled out and had to be replaced again when we putin the temp. gauge. truck runs great now. thanks anyway :)
If a 1988 Chevy Cheyenne dies when it is put into gear, check the fuel pump. If the fuel pump is not getting adequate fuel, it will cause the car to die.

NO it has nothing to do with the engine dieing. You have other problems.
The power brake booster is leaking vacuum and that makes the engine die when the brakes are applied. Replace brake booster.
