Grant was basically a simple man who was good at simplifying problems.

He knew that his job was to use his advantage in manpower to wear down the Confederate forces until their lines broke, meanwhile refusing to exchange prisoners, and allowing Sheridan to lay waste to the Shenandoah Valley, while Sherman did the same to Georgia and Carolina, bringing the Confederate armies closer to starvation.
