i do not know pecificly why but i think it is because that new and stronger, bigger castles were being built and the country sadly did not have enough money to take down the old ones. now they are historical and most likely will never be taken down unless they fall down themselves.

Castles had three main functions:

They served as the area's garrison for soldiers and its defensive stronghold.

They were the residences of the area's leadership.

They were places of refuge.

A castle could also be the town's gathering place--if there was no war at the time the castle's owner might want to use the courtyard as a marketplace, or something like that.

Then they invented cannons that could punch through castle walls, and the castle designers responded by building artillery-proof castles. They weren't fun to live in, so the kings who lived in the castles quit building castles; they chose to build good forts for their soldiers, and manor houses for themselves.

When cannon were invented the castle became obsolete. Castle style fortifications built to be able to withstand medieval weapons like catapults; but were almost useless against the more powerful and faster firing cannons.

Castles were built for one reason and that was defense. When gun powder came to Europe the castle became outdated. It was easy to blow a hole in the wall of a castle and storm it, so the method of battle had to change. After that a castle became a symbol of power and wealth so they became decorative rather than defensive. A person riding or walking along could see a castle from the distance and knew that a powerful rich person was living there.

By the end of 1500's wars were being fought in open country not around castles and kings and nobles no longer needed to live in the fortified homes. Instead, they chose to live in more comfortable houses, and castles were left empty and deserted.

Because Gunpowder made them obsolete as a means of defence. There is no point you building a big strong house if my cannon will knock your walls down.

Why were castles stopped building in Britain?

Why did they stop building castles?Castles were great defenses against the enemy. However, when gunpowder was invented the castles stopped being an effective form of defence. By the end of the 1300s gunpowder was widely in use. The medieval castle with its high vertical walls was no longer the invincible fortification it had been. Why was gunpowder so effective? The use of gunpowder made both castles and city walls much more vulnerable because a cannon could knock down the stone walls. The only way to knock down walls before the invention of gunpowder was to dig under the walls to make them unstable. This was a highly dangerous way to do it especially as you might get boiling hot tar poured over you from above! And in some cases the enemy could throw fire balls which could lead to fire and total destruction. They were also very expensive and were not practical as you couldn't go anywhere if you were surrounded by enemy troops.Certain types of fortresses, such as those developed by French King Louis XIV's General and Engineer Vauban, were much more practical against gunpowder weapons, and they came to replace the castle.
