The Muslims had been pushed out of Spain by 1498 for several reasons. For one, the Roman Catholic church felt the Muslims had too much power on the Iberian Peninsula. Furthermore, the Moors were shaping Spain in the image of a greater Arabia. In fact, there were several Mosques and Islamic architecture that replaced traditional Spanish buildings and residential establishments. Due to the dominance of the Muslims Moors, the Spanish united in an effort to oust them from their soil.
the reconquista has ended and queen Isabella/ king Ferdinand completed their task. Muslims left and others converted to Christianity. :-)
Spain was last occupied by the Muslims and drove them off in 1492 from which date the spanish have been independent.
Spain has a problem with the Basques who want indipendence, and there have been attacks by Muslims however Spain is a very safe country.
If the Muslims weren't stopped at the Battle of Tours, Islam would have spread into Europe and Christianity would have been pushed out of Europe.
It is an extremely unfortunate and pathetic chapter of Islamic History. The Muslims in Spain were put to sword, forced to convert to Christianity or forced to flee from Spain. Within a short period Spain was cleared of the Muslims where the Jews and the Christians had been living in peace for many centuries under the Muslim rule.
The Spanish Inquisition, founded in 1478. Initially, its sole function was to sniff out 'insincere converts' from Judaism. Later this was extended to Muslims and later to anyone who defied the authority of the Church. In Spain, Jews and Muslims had been put under enormous pressure since about 1350 to convert to Christianity.
SULTAN BAYEZID II was famous for accepting an extremely large number of Jewish and Muslim refugees who had been exiled from Spain in the 1492 and 1530. However, numerous Ottoman Sultans took in European refugees, especially Slavic and Turkic Muslims who were pushed out of the Balkans in the 1700s and 1800s with the numerous Balkans Independence Movements.
The main religion of Spain at that time was Catholicism. El Cid defeated the Moors who were Muslim and drove them out of Spain in 1492, and since that time Spain has been predominantly Catholic. There were a some Jews and most likely a few Muslims still around at that time, but it was not safe for them to openly express their faith.

The Battle of Covadonga is believed to have been fought in 722AD. It was the first victory of the Christians over the Muslims since the Umayyad conquest, and is believed by some to be the beginning of the Reconquest of Spain.
I believe what you are referring to is the Spanish Inquisition. The Inquisition was a mandate by King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella that all citizens of Spain must convert to Catholicism, leave, or be killed. At the time, Spain had been occupied by Catholics, Jews, and Muslims. This took place from 1480 to 1834.
