First of all, because the President has great powers that are Constitutionally linked to his office alone and that he cannot delegate to someone else even if he wished.
Beside that, no President wants to be eclipsed by his vice-president or wants to be perceived as seemingly not up to the job, which would be exploited immediately by the other Party and which might well cost him his re-election.

The only way a VP can be removed from office is by death, resignation, or impeachment and subsequent conviction by the US Congress.
