Because that's how the US legally defines spirits. If Mexico refused to raise the percentage, then the product wouldn't be a spirit in the eyes of the government, and therefore not allowed to be imported. Mexico decided that making a lot more money was a better choice than being traditionalists in this case, so they upped their percentage.
Around ~40% ABV (or 80 US proof)
20% or 40 proof. All the bottles of alcohol I've ever seen use ABV or alcohol by volume or proof on them. Note: This is based on the US system. In the UK, the ratio of degrees proof is 4:7, not 1:2. The labelling of alcoholic beverages with their ABV percentage is mandated by most governments.
Sammy Hagar sold 80% of his tequila line for a cool 80 million dollars (US). PCH = Cabo Wabo Tequila
[This question was split off from the question "How do you make tequila?"]I tried finding tequila extract--there weren't any distributors in US I surfed the internet trying to find tequila extract/flavorings and really couldn't find a distributor but everyone recommended boiling "old gold" type tequila till the alcohol was gone -- tada! tequila extract -- or using the agave products on the market-- so that made me think--maybe you can get close to the (pardon the pun) SPIRIT of tequila by trying to use agave syrup in the same way honey is used in a fermentation process---I have to admit--I'm not sure how to make tequila.
Quote from the Related Link: "What does proof mean when it refers to whiskey (and other distilled alcoholic beverages), and where did the term come from? Well, first here is the modern definition: proof is twice the percentage of alcohol by volume. Therefore, 100 proof is 50% alcohol. 200 proof is 100% alcohol."
This can be solved by converting 40% to a decimal: 40% = .40Then you can multiply $2,000 x .40 = $800
40%
40
31 percent
