Actually, they were originally invented to treat specific eye disorders. The inventor never actually intended for them to be an alternative to eyeglasses. Contact lenses were not used as an alternative to eyeglasses much before 1970, when manufacturers realized they could capitalize people who didn't want to wear glasses.

∙ 11y agoLenses are made either from glass or plastic. Both materials needs special treatment before it could be used safely with the eye. This simply wasn't possible in the past. Also, it wasn't until recently we were able to grind (process) glass to the exact shape (which affects the accuracy of the amount of light getting through).
