water can exist in a liquid form beneath it...this is incredibly important when you talk about earth's ability to sustain life...for example, think about a pond that is frozen over in the winter...would the fish be able to survive if the ice all went to the bottom? if the ice went to the bottom, you would have ponds that were completely frozen and would not be able to sustain fish, etc.

Ice is less dense than water. If ice did not float, ponds, lakes, and even the oceans would freeze solid. Life in water could not survive if bodies of water froze solid.

What type of water is most likely to float on the surface of the ocean?

Ice is a form of water that will float on the surface of the ocean.

Why does ice float on the surface of water-?

Ice floats on water because it has a lower density than water. It flows on water when either it is blown by the wind or it is moved by water currents.

Ice is heavier than water or not?

Ice is lighter (less dense) than water. Which is why ice can float on the surface of water.

Does ice float or sinks in water explain their reasons?

Ice is expanded water, so is less dense that the water it floats in. Being less dense, and so lighter, the ice will float on water with at least one third (approximately) above the surface

Why water is the only substance when freeze float on the surface of water?

Because the volume of frozen water (Ice) is more than in the liquid form. therefore an ice cube replaces more water hence it floats on the surface of water.

Why does water float in water?

Ice floats because ice is less dense (lighter) that water, especially the denser oceanic waters. Though ice floats, most of the ice cube, ice berg, etc, remains beneath the surface with only a portion showing above the surface.

Do ice float in water?

yes, ice does float in water. it will eventually melt and change into water.

What happens when ice and patrol are in the same container?

when ice and petrol are in same container ,ice will float on the surface of petrol, because ice is a frozen form of water .As water floats on oil it can not mix in it.

Ice float on top of water?

Ice float on water because the density is lower.

Do ice cubes in water float or sink?

They float, as ice is less dense than water.

Why does my ice melt in my soda?

Pure water ice cubes always float. They float because the molecules of water rearrange into a crystalline shape when they freeze. That arrangement leaves more empty space between the molecules of water which reduces the density of the water in ice form. Lower density objects float on higher density liquids.

Why do ice cubes always float a the top of the glass of water?

Ice is less dense than water and will float on water.
