The 911 centre is called that because it's the telecommunications centre that receives and processes calls to the emergency 911 system.

Added: Above is correct. Contrary to some belief, it has nothing to do with the disaster in New York City which occurred on that date. It simply happened to coincidentally occur on a date that coincided with that emergency number.
