Best Answer

It isn't. Australia does not have any official faunal emblem, despite many people believing it is the kangaroo. The piping shrike is the avian emblem of South Australia. According to the Government of SouthAustralia website, this bird (also known as the Australian magpie), was selected because it was "resourceful, brave and daring in defending its nest and young ones and with a very sweet song", and therefore a fitting emblem for the new state of South Australia.
