The life of Franklin exhibits many of the characteristics that Americans like to assume for themselves. Amongst them are the facts that he was born into an ordinary family, received no formal education, arrived in Philadelphia almost penniless -- but ended up a very wealthy business man, a world-famous scientist, an oft-quoted writer, a great philanthropist, and a very shrewd diplomat.

An apocryphal story has Franklin arriving as America's diplomat to the court of France, upon which the Queen learned that he had began his career as a publisher -- ie, someone who actually got his hands dirty to make a living. The Queen remarked, "In our country, a man like that would NEVER be allowed to become an ambassador!" Franklin noted to himself, "And that shows the difference between our two nations."
