Historically, there were a number of border conflicts because of overspill from the Cambodian Civil War. In 1975, when the Khmer Rouge was kicked out of power, they fled to the Western Provinces and continued the fight against the new Cambodian government. It was not until 1999 that a ceasefire was brokered between the Cambodian government and the Khmer Rouge remnant. Some of the fighting spilled into Thailand which prompted Thai involvement to protect its citizens.
