Zenger was acquitted in 1735 after a one-day trial for seditious libel at City Hall in New York City. His lawyer, Alexander Hamilton, argued that mere publication did not constitute libel, but that falsehood had to be proved, establishing the groundwork for freedom of the press. Freedom of the press was later incorporated into the Bill of Rights.
