John Peter Zenger, publisher of the New York Weekly Journal, was arrested by the Royal Governor, William Cosby, after he criticized the Governor's conduct of an election in 1733 on the Eastchester village green. Zenger was acquitted in 1735 after a one-day trial for seditious libel at City Hall in New York City. His lawyer, Alexander Hamilton, argued that mere publication did not constitute libel, but that falsehood had to be proved, establishing the groundwork for freedom of the press. Freedom of the press was later incorporated into the Bill of Rights.
