The Country that eventually became the U.S. was made up of British colonists and was originally part of the British empire thus speaking English. Immigration has also played a part i.e. Irish settlers who spoke English as well. Immgrants from other countries settled in large numbers i.e. Dutch, German and Italian but either very quickly learned or knew English.

This is also the reason for the vastly Different accents accross the U.S.
