Because in Roman times the soldiers had a festival every year on the 13th February where they had to spend 12 months with a woman, a lot of the soldiers fell in love with the women and married them and they did not want to go to war because they where in love. The Emperor at the time was very annoyed about this so he told the churches that they could not marry any Roman soldiers. One church refused and the Emperor had them arrested. One of the members of that church was in love with the jailers daughter and he tried to send her a letter but the jailer found out about this. That night he had his workers go to the cell where the priest was and had his workers club him to death. The priest's name was Valentine and at the end of his letter he wrote "from your Valentine". That happened on the 14th February and so that's where it comes from.
