Why is French spoken in Quebec Canada?

Quebec was first discovered by Jacques Cartier from St Malo, France which eventually led to french migration to Northern America. The French took the French language with them and hence, today, French is spoken in Quebec.

The first Eurorpeans to settle in what is now known as the province of Quebec came from France - largely from the Normandy region in the norrthwestern part of the country. The French estalbihsed Quebec as part of New France, which in the 17th century also included much of the modern Canadian Maritime Provinces and parts of the united States west of the 13 colonies. In 1763, Quebec was conquered by the British and became part of British North American. However, as part of the peace treaty following the war, the British agreed to allow the 70,000 or so French settlers in Quebec to retain their language, their relgioon and their system of laws. This became formally codififed int he British North America Act, the British legislation which founded the country of Canada in 1867. There are approximately seven million French speakers in Quebec today, and another 1.5 million spread throughout Canada in Francophone communities or regions. According to Statisitcs Canada, in 2009, 23% of Canadians have French as their mother tonuge.
