He ruled Spain as an authoritarian dictator from 1939-1975 and was responsible for much of Spain's neutrality in World War II and growth during the 1950s and 1960s. He created much of the infrastructure (both physical and societal) that has been central in modern Spain. He also groomed the current King Juan Carlos I as his protégé, indirectly setting the stage for Spain's current Constitutional Monarchy. (It is unlikely he intended for Juan Carlos to embrace democracy.)
