The gospel authors relied on the Book of Isaiah for a number of prophecies about Jesus. The most important of these is the apparent prophecy that the Messaih would be born of a virgin. In Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah prophesied that "the young woman" would conceive and bear a child, whose name would be Immanuel, a prophecy that came true just a few verses later in chapter 8. However the early Greek translation of the Old Testament, the Septuagint, mistranslated this to say that a virgin would conceive and bear a child. In the New Testament, Matthew used the Septuagint Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible to 'prove' that the virgin birth of Jesus had been prophesied. This was a misunderstanding arising from a faulty translation from Hebrew into Greek and may have been knowingly taken out of context.
The Book of Isaiah was also important for the Christian understanding of Lucifer, or Satan. The name Lucifer, meaning the morning star, was used in an ironic sense in Isaiah 14:4-22, to refer to the king of Babylon after his defeat by the Persians. This passage was misunderstood by Christian translators, resulting in the widespread Christian view that Lucifer and Satan are one.
