It was vital for the development of science as an analytical subject because Newton showed on a new level how mathematical analysis could be used to explain natural phenomena - in detail. This showed the way for subsequent scientists, leading ultimately to new branches of physics and the benefits we enjoy in modern times.

Newton's major achievement in the history of scientific thought was to take Kepler's newly discovered laws of planetary motion which stated that the planets move in elliptical orbits. Newton explained theoretically that the planets must move in elliptical orbits if they are under the force of gravity that follows the new theory that Newton developed for gravity - mainly that it follows an inverse-square law with changing distance.

To achieve this Newton had to establish laws of motion as well as the law of gravity, and on top of that he had to develop what is now called differential calculus to show that the planet's path is curved by exactly the right amount at any instant determined by the force of gravity acting on it.

For these reasons Isaac newton is usually considered the leading phyicist of all time.
