Because the Jewish concept of a messiah was that of righteous king who saves the Jewish people from oppression and right the wrongs in society. The prophet Samuel anointed David king and Psalm 132 quotes God saying the children of David shall sit on his throne forever "if thy children will keep my covenant and my testimony". The Chaldeans sacked Jerusalem and carried off the Davidic royal family to Babylon in 597 BCE. Obviously the descendants of David broke the covenant with God. Issue: was the Jewish throne still theirs forever? The Hasmoneans, who sat on the Jewish throne from 140-37 BCE were not descendants of David, nor even from the tribe of Judah. They were Kohanim priests of the tribe of Levi. Although many statements from others recorded in The Bible claim he was a "son of David", Jesus himself never utters these words. In fact, a close reading of Matthew 22:41-45, Mark 12:35-37, and Luke 20:41-44 seems to indicate Jesus denies he is a son of David. A theory exits for a reading of the ancestry of Jesus given in Luke, Chapter 3 connecting Jesus to the Hasmonean kings.

This theory is in the extreme minority.

I believe that Jesus was decended from the house of David.

Is Jesus from the tribe of Levi?

Both family trees given in the gospels trace his male line back to David, who was of the Tribe of Judah. Jesus would therefore have been a Judahite. It's fairly likely that Jesus had some Levite ancestry (the tribes had intermarried considerably by that time), though since descent was traced patrilineally he was of the tribe of Judah. His cousin John (son of Elizabeth and Zechariah), on the other hand, was of the Tribe of Levi (Zechariah was a temple priest, an occupation limited to Levites). There's a not-entirely-well-thought-out line of reasoning that goes "Mary's nephew was a Levite, so Mary was a Levite, so Jesus was a union of King (Judah) and Priest (Levi)." However, this doesn't work: John was a Levite because his father was a Levite, and this says nothing about what his mother was. The commonly accepted view is that one of Jesus' lineages in the gospels is that of Joseph (his ancestry legally) and the other is that of Mary (his ancestry biologically), but both of them are clearly within the tribe of Judah.

Which Tribes of Israel exist today?

The great majority of Jews today, some 80% or so, are descended from the tribe of Judah (plus converts and descendents of converts). The remaining 20% include Levites (from the tribe of Levi), Cohanim (also a part of the Levites), and a small percentage from every one of the remaining tribes. (When the Ten Tribes were carried off into Assyria and didn't return, a few of them had already mixed into the tribe of Judah before that, through marriage.)

Who was the third Son of Jacob and Leah?

There may be other reasons for the significance of Levi, but one reason is that he became the father of the tribe who served as priests in the temple. Only Levites (those descended from Levi) could become priests. I believe that Moses (and therefore his brother Aaron) were both from the tribe of Levi.

What tribe of Israel was Moses?

Why was it impossible for Jesus to be a priest in the Old Testament?

Under the Mosaic Law, the priestly class was ONLY from the tribe of Levi, through Aaron(Numbers 3:5-10). Jesus came through the kingly tribe of Judah(1Chronicles 28:4; Genesis 49:10), and will be the King of God's Kingdom (Revelation 5:5;Isaiah 11:10; Romans 15:12).
