Egypt is on the verge of revolution. It has been a rare, stable, U.S. friendly country in the Middle East and was the first Middle Eastern country to sign a peace treaty with Israel. In theory, the United States should always support democratic governments abroad, which seems to be what the Egyptian protesters are asking for. At the same time, Mubarek was good for the United States in that he countered Iran, helped with Israeli peace, and fought against radical Islamic groups within Egyptian borders. Thus, U.S. foreign policy is stuck in a catch 22.
