On Pentecost the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles giving them the stimulation they needed to begin preaching the Gospel. Pentecost is the birthday of the Church and, had it not happened, the Church never would have gotten started. It would have died out quickly.

What is something the Catholic Church does during Christmas?

Christmas, which lasts from Christmas Day (itself an Octave of eight days) lasts until the Sunday after the Epiphany, the Baptism of the Lord. Christmas, along with Easter and Pentecost, is one of the three great feasts of the Christian year. We celebrate the birth of Our Blessed Savior for eight days, and actually for the entire season of Christmas, with feasts and gift giving. "Little Christmas" (the feast of the Epiphany on January 6) celebrates the showing of Christ to the world as we celebrate the visit of the Magi to worship the new-born King.

When and how is Pentecost celebrated in Christian communities today?

Roman Catholic AnswerAfter Christmas and Easter, Pentecost - the birthday of the Church - is one of the greatest feasts of the year. Pentecost ends the Easter Season, the next begins Ordinary Time. The priest may choose to use the Sprinkling Rite in place of the Penitential Rite, Alleluia is sung, the Gloria is sung, white (or Gold) vestments are worn. It is a Solemnity of great joy, just as Jesus arose from the dead and came to His Church on Easter, now He sends the Holy Spirit on His Church to be with it and guide it until the end of time.

What do you call the cycle of seasons and feasts celebrating the presence of Jesus Christ with us all the time and the events in his life?

This is what is called the Liturgical year. The liturgical year is broken up into two subsections. One of which is the cycle of Sundays and major feasts (Easter, Pentecost, Christmas, etc.) which is called the Temporal Cycle. The other part is the Sanctoral cycle which celebrates the lives of the saints.
