Prince Charles has the title of 'Prince of Wales' because of it being traditionally granted to the heir apparent to the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Originally it was granted to the future King Edward II as an infant in 1301 by his father King Edward I who had defeated the native princes of Wales and named his son as such as a matter of humiliation for the Welsh, incidentally Edward II was born in Wales, at Caernarfon. Edward II himself did not grant the title to his own son, Edward III who revived the tradition that has endured to the present day. It is almost certain that should Prince Charles accede to the throne of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, then Prince William would receive the title 'Prince of Wales'.
