The Santo Niño is the oldest Christian symbol in the Philippines. It signifies the beginnings of Christianity in the now predominant Roman Catholic country.

It also symbolizes the beginnings of the 333 years of Spanish colonization, beginning with Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer under the Spanish monarch, who landed on the island of Cebu. \

Magellan traded the image of Seño Santo Niño, the original image which still exist is dressed with jewels from Europe and pearls from the Philippines, for the pearls of the natives.

The inhabitants of Cebu, the Cebuanos, were the first Filipinos to be Christianized. They honour Santo Niño every third Sunday of January with a festival called Sinulog. The first mass was also held in Cebu, when Rajah Humabon and Hara Amihan of Cebu were baptized and took the names Carlos and Juana.
