The temple built by Solomon was the first permanent temple structure in the history of the Jewish people. Prior to that time worship was performed in tabernacles, or tents. The first tents of worship were created when the Jews wandered in the wilderness for 40 years after being delivered from Egypt. Even after entering the Promised Land, though, no permanent structure was built. King David wanted to do so, but God did not allow it, telling him that his son, Solomon, would do so.
When God had Moses bring the Hebrews out of Egypt, He gave them His laws and told them to build a tabernacle so that worship could be given to Him. The tabernacle went every place the people went and when they came into the Promised Land it was set up in a semi permanent place called Shiloh. It remained there approximately 400 years, but was destroyed in 1050 B.C. by the Philistines. The Tabernacle contained all the furniture that was used in worshiping the Lord along with the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark was taken by the Philistines for a while but later returned. In the mean time some of the furniture was located in several different places until the time of King David when he had a new tabernacle build at Jerusalem and had the Ark of the Covenant brought to Jerusalem. David wanted to build a permanent Temple for God but was told by God that Solomon, his son, would be the one to build the temple. The temple's purpose was the same as the tabernacle but build in a more permanent fashion.
He built the Holy Temple in Jerusalem (1 Kings ch.6-8).

Scribes in ancient Judea taught about the Jewish religion. They debated certain aspects of the Bible and recorded important events in Jewish history.
To be Jewish can mean you either practice the Jewish religion, or are from a Jewish decent. It is both a race and a religion. Someone that is culturally Jewish may not practice the religion, but has a Jewish heritage. Likewise, people that do practice the Jewish religion do not have to be culturally Jewish, or have Jewish ancestors.
