Matthew had been a corrupt tax collector but gave up that position and joined Our Lord as one of the 12 apostles. He is known as the author of one of the four canonical gospels. He was martyred for his faith - an automatic ticket to heaven and sainthood.

St. Matthew is considered a saint in the Catholic Church because he was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ and is believed to have authored the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament. His devotion to spreading the teachings of Christ and his martyrdom for his faith are reasons for his canonization as a saint.
