Thanksgiving is a time to pause and give thanks for the bounty of your country and to gather as a family to celebrate.

Thanksgiving Day, celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, at the end of the harvest season, is an annual American Federal holiday to express thanks for one's material and spiritual possessions. The period from Thanksgiving Day to New Year's Day often is called the holiday season.

Most people celebrate by gathering at home with family or friends for a holiday feast. Though the holiday's origins can be traced to harvest festivals that have been celebrated in many cultures since ancient times the American holiday has religious undertones related to the deliverance of the English settlers by Native Americans after the brutal winter at Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Thanksgiving is important because it sets aside a day to thank God for his many blessings on America. In the fall of 1621, Governor William Bradford called for this feast to thank God for the abundant harvest the Pilgrims had reaped that year. It is important to continue this tradition and thank God for the blessings he has given us.

Thanksgiving was conceived as a celebration to thank God for harvests and was celebrated across Europe and beyond Over several centuries, it has become largely a North American celebration although several other countries also still celebrate it.

The US and Canadian thanksgiving holidays have become a secular holiday rather than a religious festival although the roots of the holiday can still be traced back to the Pilgrims and early settlers of what was to become the United States.

For those who wish to remember the settlers and for those who wish to thank God for every harvest and for the birth of two great nations it remains an important celebration and the thanksgiving dinner is a part of that annual celebration and another reason to give thanks.

Although thanksgiving was once an important celebration in the British religious calender, the celebration has changed into a harvest festival and remains a church festival rather than a national celibration.

The holiday of Thanksgiving is celebrated in both Canada & the United States. In the USA, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving, which had been a Protestant religious feast, as a national holiday in 1863. He did so with pressure from radical Republican Protestants. He believed that this and adding "In God We Trust" to US coinage was ecumenical.

Taking this holiday to the present day, its origins as a Protestant religious feast can be ignored and it has a new meaning now.

There can be three reasons to say why this is important:

1. It can viewed as a day to give thanks for all we have both as a free people & the bounty that our freedom has given us;

2. A day for a family gathering, family & friends have this occasion to come together and renew our relationships; and

3. Yes, as we were taught in elementary school, a day in our history to commemorate when new people to the New World, celebrated with the Native Americans a great harvest and feast day.
