Another View: Aside from the fact that it is the seat of the nations government as referred to above - it is the only federal "District" in the nations political/geographic infrastructure. It is not a state, nor is it a territory. It was designed to be the non-politicized "home" of the federal government where the government could meet and its employees could work and live without the interference or the pressure of local political events which occurred in the individual states.
