Bloody Mary is in fact Tudor Queen of England Mary I. The eldest child of Henry VIII, and the only surviving child of Catherine of Aragon. She was raised as a Catholic, and her tutors were Catholic. To divorce his wife, Henry VIII reformed the English Church and cut its allegiance to the Church of Rome, thus forming The Church of England. Henry died and Edward took over, who really reformed the church stripping them of all things catholic or dogmatic. Edward dies, and Mary takes charge (after a bit of conspiracy is thwarted). Mary was desperate to correct England in the eyes of God, The Pope and the Church of Rome. To do this she re-enacted old heresy laws, which allowed for unrepentant heretics to be burned at the stake, although in for certain protestants, repenting wasn't enough and she burned them anyway.

Mary Burned about 300 people in her short five year reign. Of course this pales in comparison to her own father who killed about 72,000 people in his reign. But it was the brutality of Mary's preferred execution which gave her the name Bloody Mary. Although people did repent, she burned them anyway, turning them into Martyrs, which helped discredit Mary's regime. Her cruelty, lack of mercy, and general unpopularity gave her the nickname Bloody Mary, which has stuck ever since.

Hope that is more informative :-)

The origin is not really known.

It is more than likely associated with Queen Mary I of England whose 16th-century persecution of Protestants earned her the nickname "Bloody Mary"" as a bloodthirsty tyrant.

The colour of the drink (red) and the name seems to support this.

During her reign she was not called 'Bloody Mary', in fact at the start of her reign she was called 'Merciful Mary'. The nickname 'Bloody Mary' developed in the 17th century partially because of John Foxe's Book of Martyrs which documented the deaths of Protestant martyrs and contains detail on the Marian Martyrs. During Mary's reign 283 people were burned at the stake for being determined Protestants who would not keep their beliefs quiet. In fact she was no more bloody than Henry VIII, Edward VI and Elizabeth I if anything she was less bloody, but as history is written by the victors and in England the Protestants were the victors she has gone down in history as a bloody and bigoted Catholic. The earliest reference to 'Bloody Mary' came from John Foxe who spoke of 'the turbulent and bloody time of Queen Mary'.
