Is starting current of a AC Motor measured as RMS or PEAK?

IT DEPENDS WHAT MEASURING INSTRUMENT YOU ARE USING. RMS - IF USING THE CLAMP AMMETER OR PANEL METER OSCILLOSCOPE - BOTH CAN BE READ

What is a moving coil ammeter?

A moving-coil ammeter is an analogue ammeter, used to measure direct current. It works on the same principle as an electric motor, whereby a pivoted coil, located between the two poles of a horseshoe magnet, will rotate when current is passed through it. The movement is restricted by a pair of hairsprings, which means that the moving coil will move through an angle that is proportional to the current. A pointer, attached to the coil, sweeps across a suitably-graduated scale, to indicate the value of current passing through the coil.

When does a motor draw current more than its rated current?

This is a good indication that the motor is being overloaded. If the motor load is belt driven, remove the belt and then check the motor amps. If it goes back to normal FLA then there is a problem with the driven load. If the motor amperage stays high check the motor bearings for the problem.

How do you measure the resistance of a motor?

we can measure the resistance of the motor by using voltmeter ammeter method of by directly using a multimeter across the armature terminals of the motor in voltmeter ammeter method we should use a less value of dc voltage to find the resistance

What will the current be on a hand held meter on a three phase motor if you clamp to two leads?

No way to tell. first off odds are you're measuring voltage rather than current, but apart from that the value would differ with your grid service and the rating of the motor

How do you check how many amps a motor is pulling?

For permanent current measurement of large motor amperage's the feeder wires are run through a CT (current transformer) whose output is displayed on a panel mounted amp meter. A clamp on amp meter is a fairly accurate measuring device that measures the current while the motor is in operation. It is a hand held device that clamps around the motor lead that is being tested. A comparison between the clamp on meter and the motor name plate will let you know if the motor is near overload or if it is in an overloaded condition.

How much rating ammeter required in rcu for 75 kw motor?

200 amphere

Would a one third horsepower single phase motor that normally operates at 6.8 amps draw 34 amps at start up?

Not usually. The rule of thumb is 300% of the full load amps. The only way that you can check this inrush current is to have a clamp on amp-meter with the setting on Hold. What this does, is sense the highest current at start up and holds the reading on the screen until you release it. If you try and start a motor under a high inertia load the current will rise above a normal inrush level. Disconnect the load from the motor to establish that it is the load that is causing the high amperage and not the motor's internal wiring.

Describe the steps you take to troubleshoot a 3 phase 480 volt motor that continually trips the heaters?

Start by checking the motor current when the motor is running under load with a clamp on amp meter. If it is over nameplate rating, check and find out if the load the motor is driving is somehow dragging and creating more load that normal. 98% of the time it is the load seizing up that causes motors to trip. Drop the load off the motor and see if the motor runs under nameplate amperage. If it does that is good. Check for loose connection in the motor contactor and around the overload heater block. Check and make sure the overload heaters are set to the FLA of the motor. As a last resort megger the motor to make sure one of the phases has not grounded out.

Where is the serial number on a mercury outboard motor?

It is on the clamp bracket and also on the motor it looks like a freeze plug where it is stamped on the motor

What is the difference between a thermal motor protector and current-type motor protector?

thermal motor protector is temperature; current type is current.
