Around 1900 a broader lifestyle 'reform' started in Germany. It stressed the role of what would now be called organic produce, vegetarianism, 'natural' (that is, comfortable, loose fitting) clothing and so on. The first food shop of this kind opened in Barmen (Wuppertal) in 1900 and was called Reformhaus Jungbrunnen. The name Reformhaus has stuck.
