When you fire something made of clay in a kiln you are more or less quickly creating an artificial rock. It is similar to a igneous or metamorphic rock.

Typically stoneware pottery fires to somewhere between 2200 and 2500 degrees F. Lava is usually about 1,292 to 2,192 °F.

When clay is heated to this temperature it changes permanently. Even if it was ground to a powered and water was added it would not be clay again it would be a wet paste. As it heats, different minerals melt. As it cools new crystals such as mullite are formed. It is much more like a rock.

The only difference is that, except for rocks made in a volcano, most rocks are created at both high temperature, high pressure and over a great deal of time. That long cooling time and high pressure makes for different structures.
