The Guineafowl originates from the Guinea region of Africa but in Europe it was often imported through Turkey, so it became known as the "Turkey Fowl". After European settlers travelled to America and discovered a similar bird, they mistook it for being a Guineafowl and the name Turkey became stuck with it.

In Turkey the turkey is called something like the "Hindu bird". In India it's called the "Peruvian bird".

The country itself never used the name "Turkey" until it became a republic in the 1920s. Before that it was called the Ottoman Empire, but European countries would often call it Turkey after the people who lived there - the Turks.

It comes indirectly from the name of the country Turkey. The story is quite complicated.

Turkey is named after the Turks, the people who live there. Actually, the country didn't use this name officially until the 1920s. Before that it was known as the Ottoman Empire.

The Guineafowl, which comes from Africa, was often known as the "Turkey fowl" in Europe because it was imported through Turkish traders. After European settlers went to the Americas and discovered a new type of bird, they mistook it for being a guineafowl and started calling it the Turkey fowl.

English isn't the only language to name the bird after the country it doesn't come from. In Turkey, the turkey is called a hindi, after India, or less commonly mısır after the Arabic name for Egypt. Several European countries name it after India, while Dutch and the Scandinavian languages name it after Calcutta. In India, it's called the Peru. In Greek it's called the French Chicken. In Arabic, it's either called the Ethiopian bird or the Roman bird.
