The name Abel means 'vapor'. Perhaps this was divinely inspired by the Lord to reflect his short but righteous life. The Bible says our life is as a vapor (James 4:14). It is ironic that in a day when men lived for hundreds of years Abel's life was cut short - like our Lord too who lived only into His early 30's. And both were killed by those of their own house.
Jacob put it well:
"...few and evil have the days of the years of my life been..." (Gen. 47:9).
In this life we will have tribulation (John 16:33) and many afflictions (Ps. 37:33) but thankfully it is only but a moment (2 Cor.4:17) and we will be delivered out of it all and preserved unto His heavenly Kingdom (2 Tim. 4:17). Amen.
