Acid should be poured into water, because if you pour the acid into the water, only the water would splash out and hit you, as opposed to if you pour water into acid, the acid would splash out and hit you.

If you pour acid into water and it splashes the probability of getting a chemical burn is considerable less than if you pour water into acid. It doesn't change the reaction or the outcome of the experiment it is simply for safety reasons.

It you pour acid into water and splash the liquid in the container out of the container with some volume you are only splashing water on yourself.

If you pour water into acid and it splashes on you you have splashed yourself with acid.

What happens if water gets mixed with acid?

When done correctly (i.e. the acid poured into the water), the acid becomes diluted and there should be no other effects other than a slight amount of heat and possible splashing from the resulting exothermic reaction. When done stupidly (i.e. water poured into acid), the acid is rapidly partially neutralized by the water, resulting in extreme heat and definite splashing. Unless you think you would look really sweet with an acid burn, do NOT do this.
