When done correctly (i.e. the acid poured into the water), the acid becomes diluted and there should be no other effects other than a slight amount of heat and possible splashing from the resulting exothermic reaction. When done stupidly (i.e. water poured into acid), the acid is rapidly partially neutralized by the water, resulting in extreme heat and definite splashing. Unless you think you would look really sweet with an acid burn, do NOT do this.

When you mix acid and water, you pour the acid into a larger volume of water. Mixing the chemicals the other way can present a lab safety hazard.if water is added to a acid (H2SO4),it reacts very vigorously with water, as it is a highly exothermic reaction. If you add water to concentrated sulfuric acid, it can boil and spit and you may get a nasty acid burn.

As the acid dissociates in the water, it creates a lot of heat, boiling the water.

If you pour acid into water, the water acts as a heat sink, and little happens.

However, if you pour water into concentrated acid, it is possible for the water to be heated so rapidly that it explodes into steam, throwing acid out of the beaker.

What impact would acid rain have on the great lakes?

Learnt them when i was small. Acid rain lowers the Ph of the water thus, affecting the aquatic life in it. Sometimes, in Acid rains, aluminium oxide gets mixed with it. As it reaches the fish's gills, a strong acid mixed with aluminium oxide goes in and blocks the fish's gills from any oxygenated water to pass in then out.

What happens when air pollution gets into rivers?

Air pollution is generally acidic in nature, involving nitrogen and sulfur compounds that produce acid when dissolved in water, so when they wash out of the air in the rain, the result is known as acid rain. When acid rain gets into rivers, they acidify. This is harmful to fish.
