Asbestos can have many different appearances- which is why it may only be reliably identified by laboratory tests. One popular form was known as "air cell" asbestos. Here, the asbestos mineral was mixed with wood pulp (paper) and passed through a machine that formed corrugations, much like corrugated cardboard. When dried, this product was used as pipe lagging (insulation). The air spaces in the "waves" reduced the transmission of heat, and improved the insulating value.
