Coal is a solid, non-renewable resource which is used to produce electricity and heat through combustion. The majority of coal is used to generate electricity so this is probably the reason why coal is economically important in West Virginia as it is in every country. Although coal has many other uses, by taking out by-products it can create: Plastics, Synthetic fibers, tar, fertilizers and pharmaceuticals.
