In a quick answer, David was a great king of Israel that loved the Lord. He is known for his love for God and his people.
To go further, this David is the same one from the story of David and Goliath. He had great trust in the Lord as a boy. The Bible follows his life from when he kills Goliath to when he became king. He was the first king for the United Israel. He wrote the book of Psalms, which are mostly great praises to God. He had a genuine love for God. He was righteous compared to many of the other leaders. He's the first leader for the Jews that was righteous like this... he wasn't sinless... he had a lot of faults. But, he loved the Lord. And it is out of that great love that he did so many things, and for his love he is often referred to as "A Man After God's Heart". He is known for dancing naked in the streets also. He didn't dance because he was crazy.. it was because after many years that the Arc of the Covenant had been taken from the city of Jerusalem David finally had it brought back. He was excited and he couldn't contain his excitement so he danced in the streets. Also, David's geneology line is traced to Jesus therough Joseph... this was prophecied early in the Old Testament from Abraham. See Ruth 4:18-22.
