File formats and extensions are more or less the same thing. Their importance lies in identifying how to use the file. That is, having a document with the extension .doc or .docx tells the computer that the file needs to be opened using a word processing application. If the file extension (the .XXX) is .jpg for instance, the computer knows that it is an image file and that it should open it with an image viewer.

∙ 12y agoA file extension is the suffix at the end of a filename, which shows what kind of file it is.
For example, you can see that the file "mystuff.txt" is a .txt (text) file by looking at the suffix at the end.
Another example is a picture file extension such as "mypicture.jpg" as you can see the ".jpg" sufffix showing that it is a JPG image.
All file extensions are not only 3 letter suffixes, extensions such as ".TORRENT" and ".GADGET" exist too.
The file extension normally reffer it to a certain program to be opened in, for example ".txt" would be opened in the program NotePad and ".docx" would open in Microsoft Word.
There are thousands of programs available, so there are also thousands of file extensions, but there are also commonly used extensions.

∙ 12y agoIt's basically what the file is. It's similar to how you and animals are different. Only 1 type of file wouldn't work at all, because there are so many different needs. Document files couldn't be the same file as picture files, and so on.

∙ 12y agoFile extension helps to recognise its 'File Type'. If related application is already installed / available that will automatically recognise the file based on extension and allows us to access it.
Without extension file will be invalid / not accessible, because as i said earlier each and every application / software will recognise its file based on the file extension.
(ex: .jpg - JPG Image, .doc - Word Document, .ppt - Power Point file)
