1. their horse powered buggies are limited to traveling short distances in a day
2. they date & marry generally in their own community
3. they try to trade goods between each other, to reduce cost and avoid taxes
4. most are farmers and they help each other during planting, harvesting, etc.
5. they share rarely used tools so no one person has to own all tools needed
6. they go only to Amish churches, and their children only to Amish schools
7. it is also a way of having minimal contact with "English" outsiders, so their young members are not enticed by the outside world into leaving, so outsiders are not scrutinizing and mingling in their affairs, and as a means for their elders to maintian control over their members.
