Yes, Gambling is sinful in Islam.
Work in Islam is very much respectable and when performed honestly and properly it is ranked and rewarded as worship to God. However, gambling is getting money or losing money by the gambler without work. That is why it is sinful in Islam.
Losing money in gambling will get you not happy and affecting negatively your life and your mode. On the other hand, earning money by gambling will make you temporarily happy and will persuade you to play more to lose again money.
Gambling also creates hate and enmity among gamblers and wastes time that should be devoted to useful activities.
Quran says (meaning English translation):
" ... Intoxicants and gambling,..., are an abomination of Satan's handiwork: Eschew such (abomination), that you may prosper Satan's plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants and gambling and to hinder you from the remembrance of God (Allah) and from prayer: Will you not then abstain?"[Quran, chapter 5, verse 90-91]Even if playing free for fun, and not or for real money, it is also prohibited for two reasons:
it may persuade one later to play with real money
it is waste of time that could be used in something funny also but more useful intellectually, socially, or physically.
However, God is love and is merciful to the sinner. He forgives him if he admits that he made a sin, repents, and intend not to make the sin again.
God is always accepting you with love if you repent and follow again his right path.
They ask you about intoxicants and games of chance. Say: In both of them there is a great sin and means of profit for men, and their sin is greater than their profit. And they ask you as to what they should spend. Say: What you can spare. Thus does Allah make clear to you the communications, that you may ponder
Quran 2:219
O ye who believe! Strong drink and games of chance and idols and divining arrows are only an infamy of Satan's handiwork. Leave it aside in order that ye may succeed.
Quran 5:90
In short, gambling (or "games of chance") is forbidden in Islam.
Gambling is not approved of in Islam because Islam plays a moderate role in worship, similarly it plays a role in economics and social orders. How can Islam, the moderate way of life, cope with a state where one can take possession of somebody else's property without a valid reason, due to which, the latter gets poorer and his state diminishes and the former, without working, gathers the wealth equivalent to that of Qaroon (a kaafir whom Allah bestowed with great wealth at the time of Musa AS)?
Alternatively, without any religious excuse, a great amount of wealth is taken from a poorer person's pocket and a single person is made to own it.
Therefore, it is vital for Islam to prohibit these unfair ways of taking possessions.
