The blood is carried in to the liver by hepatic portal vein, in order to fix the essential nutrients that have obtained by the digestion of food materials. Then it enters the systemic circulation. This process only gives us energy to survive. And this system is known as Hepatic Portal System.

The portal vein is no real vein because blood carries capillary beds in the liver and not directly to the heart. It is an important part of the hepatic portal system, one of only two portal venous systems in the body - the pituitary portal vein which are different.

The portal system carries blood from the intestines to the liver.  Intestinal blood goes to the liver first because it is full of nutrients that the liver can use (most importantly glucose that the liver can turn into glycogen).  Also, any ingested toxins get shunted to the liver first, which is also great because the liver has enzymes that can detoxify things before they get into the systemic circulation.
