Illiteracy is the primary reason why 3rd world countries are so firmly in the grip of AIDS and several other STDs. The populace at large doesn't know about AIDS and how it spreads. Awareness about contraceptives is also low, as is access to medical help. Also, because of widespread poverty, families cannot afford basic means of entertainment like TV sets. Hence, sex is their primary form of recreation!

Higher population also more people living in compact areas such as the city Also a poor diet of fast food and not enough vitamins mutations of the disease could mean that less people are immune and so no herd immunity travel makes it easy to spread disease from country to country if infected people are flying some diseases can also live on non biological matter so diseases can be spread

malaria is a common disease in Africa because there is a lot of area that has tropical climates and is generally poor. Since mosquitoes transfer the disease and in poor countries there are no bug control programs, many readily available bite victims live close by mosquitoes that transfer the disease making it more common in Africa.

The hot environment coupled with stagnant water is a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. These mosquitoes become infected and then bite the local population. Because they do not have a good standard of living they will soon infect others in the population.

There are a number of reasons why HIV has and continues to spread in South Africa:

  • The government was late to acknowledge the disease and to take a proactive approach to its control. You will remember that in the 1980s, as the epidemic was starting, South Africa was embroiled in political strife, particularly as it applied to the issue to apartheid and the struggle for freedom for Blacks.
  • Behavioral and social behaviors have played a role in the spread of disease (ex. lack of condom use, acceptance of multiple partners)
  • Poverty is always a factor. Where there is poverty, there is lack of education, poor access to health care, lack of medicines, lack of information, prostitution, etc.
  • High rates of sexual assaults. South Africa has the highest rate of rape in the world, including rape of children.
  • Stigma--because HIV/AIDS is so highly stigmatized in many parts of Africa, including South Africa, people are reluctant to go for HIV testing and treatment for fear they will be ostracized or targeted.
