A surge protector is designed to absorb the energy of temporary overvoltage surges on the powerline, preventing damage to delicate electronic devices plugged into the surge protector.

Minor surges are safely absorbed with no problems. Major surges may cause the surge protector to sacrifice itself to protect the devices, if so you will have to replace the "burned out" surge protector with a new one.

  • A surge protector is a device that clips off peaks of transient overvoltage spikes (surges) that appear on the powerlines from time to time. This action protects any equipment plugged into the surge protector from damage due to those spikes. If the spike is more than the surge protector is able to handle it will short internally causing its breaker to pop, disconnecting the equipment from power completely to protect the equipment (and dying in so doing, you will have to replace the failed surge protector).
  • An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a device that in its simplest form consists of three parts: a battery charger, a storage battery, and a power inverter. The battery charger keeps the storage battery fully charged as long as the powerline is energized. The power inverter generates clean AC power to any equipment plugged into the UPS from the DC in the storage battery. If the powerline loses power the power inverter can continue providing uninterrupted clean AC power to any equipment plugged into the UPS for several minutes (until the storage battery is discharged), if the powerline is reenergized before this time runs out the equipment runs uninterrupted through the brief loss of power.

Will a surge protector last longer if it's unplugged from the wall outlet during an electrical storm?

Possibly, but that's kind of missing the whole point of a surge protector. The surge protector exists to protect the things that are plugged into it. If you're not using those devices anyway during the storm, sure, go ahead and unplug the surge protector... but you could also have just unplugged the devices themselves from the wall and not bought a surge protector in the first place. Also, storms don't directly damage surge protectors. Stopping surges damages surge protectors. If there's no surge, it doesn't matter if the surge protector is plugged in or not.

How does a surge protector help maintain a computer system?

I dont think it protects the system, it just keeps your computer for blowing up when there is a power surge. What the surge protector does is it takes "the hit" from the surge and that fries instead of the computer.
